Syl Sebert has been a part of Southside since the late 80’s (except for a four year stint ’05-’09 when she and Jane lived in Kokomo). She has served terms of eldership throughout that period and considers being an elder at Southside a blessing from God and other Southsiders. Sylvia frequently leads studies about various topics and enjoys the challenge of teaching in ways that encourage everyone to open themselves, discover and express what they think about issues, then hold that up to the light of God’s love and see how it looks. She has found that to be a healing/growing method for herself as she has been able to learn from others throughout the years. It has definitely broadened her view of God and helped her accept that we are loved and part of God’s family. Sylvia is a Stephen Minister/Stephen Leader. For years, Sylvia worked in service to children and families and retired early due to health conditions. Sylvia also considers herself very blessed by her loving partner of twenty-five years, Jane.
Tony Angelo Tony Angelo has been a part of Southside since 2004 when he and his partner, Joseph, attended a Valentine’s Day dance and were invited to “give Sunday service a try. “ Tony has served as liturgist, a deacon, Board Chair and is currently Bookkeeper (a job that apparently comes with a lifetime appointment). A former Catholic with a strong, early calling to the priesthood, Tony had to reconcile a lot of internal struggles before accepting – after three previous declines – a position as Elder. A 1987 graduate of Notre Dame, Tony lived in Dallas, TX before moving to South Bend in 1989. Although he was a Certified Public Accountant, Tony has been following his true calling, writing computer software, since 1991. Of our Open and Affirming church, Tony likes to say that “When Joe and I found Southside, I felt that, finally, I have found a place where life in the spirit is not opposed to the life I live every day.“
